What is form validation?

Form validation is the checking of answers against rules before a form accepts them. Growform checks whether a required field has been filled in and whether the answer has the right format for its field type. An insurance lead who types nine digits of a ten-digit phone number is asked to correct it while they are still on the form.

Growform is a form builder with validation already built into its fields, so you write no patterns and no scripts.

How do required fields work?

Required fields must be answered before the lead can move past the step they are on. Most input fields have a “This field is required” setting. The Name field lets you require the title, the first name and the last name separately, and the consent checkbox is required by default.

Which formats does Growform check?

Growform checks the format of an answer on the fields where a wrong format makes a lead unusable.

Email fields always check that the address is correctly formed.
Phone fields always check the number against the format of the country you chose.
Website fields check that the answer is a valid URL.
ZIP and postal code fields check the format used in the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia or France.
Date of birth fields check that the date entered is a real one.
Number fields can accept whole numbers only, and Date fields can refuse dates in the past.

How does real-time phone number validation differ from a format check?

Real-time phone number validation sends the number to Twilio Lookup while the lead is still filling in the form, which goes further than comparing it with a format. Phone validation runs on your own Twilio account, and email validation does the same for email addresses through your own ZeroBounce account. Both start on the Professional plan, while ZIP code validation by format is on every plan.

How to set up validation on a field

Select the field

Click the field in the editor to open its settings, which include the validation options for that field type.

Make it required

Switch on “This field is required” for every answer your sales team cannot work without.

Set the format

Choose the “Default country format” on a Phone field, or the country format on a ZIP code field.

Save and try it

Save the form, open it, and attempt to continue with an empty field and a badly formatted answer.

What validation changes for lead quality

Frequently asked questions

Is validation the same as verification?

No. Validation checks that an answer is well formed or appears to be valid. Confirming that a phone number belongs to the lead takes a one-time passcode, which is a separate feature.

In which languages are the error messages shown?

The built-in messages exist in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hungarian, Hebrew, Norwegian and Swedish. Growform picks the language from the browser of the lead.

Do the format checks need a Twilio or ZeroBounce account?

No. Required fields and format checks work without any other account. Your own Twilio or ZeroBounce account is needed only for real-time validation.
