Answer piping: recall earlier answers in your form
Type @ in a header or paragraph to insert something the lead already told you, such as their first name or city. The form reads as if it were written for that one person.
What is answer piping?
Answer piping means inserting an answer from an earlier question into text the lead sees later in the form. Growform calls the feature callouts. A callout is a placeholder in a header or paragraph that Growform replaces with the lead's own answer, and the text updates as the form is filled in.
A header written as “@First name, can we contact you about your policy?” is shown to the lead as “Jacob, can we contact you about your policy?”.
Which earlier answers can you recall?
You can recall earlier answers from the fields that come before the text, and two field types can be inserted in parts.
- A Name field offers the title, the first name and the last name separately, so a greeting can use the first name alone.
- An Address Lookup field offers the full address, line 1, line 2, the city, the state or province, the ZIP or postcode, and the country.
A home improvement company can confirm “We cover @City” on the step after address autocomplete, without repeating the whole address.
Can you use callouts in email alerts?
Yes. The subject and body of an email alert accept @ mentions of your form's fields, as well as “All fields” and “Form name”. A subject line such as “New lead, @First name in @City” tells your team who the lead is before they open the email. The other email alert settings are described under notifications.
How are callouts different from conditional logic?
Callouts change what the text says, and conditional logic changes which fields and steps appear. Personalized forms often use the two on the same step. Conditional logic shows the follow-up question for homeowners, and a callout puts the homeowner's name in the heading above it.

Place the cursor where the answer should appear and type @. A list of the form's fields opens.
Pick the field
Choose the field to insert. For a Name or Address Lookup field, choose the part you want.
What recalled answers add to a lead form
- The contact step addresses the lead by name.
A callout inserts the first name into the heading that asks for a phone number.
- The lead sees a summary before submitting.
A line such as “You've chosen a 6-panel solar array system” repeats the choice, so a mistake is caught before it reaches your sales team.
- The form does not ask the same thing twice.
Text that repeats an answer reinforces what the lead entered, without a second field for it.
- Your team can read an email alert from the subject line.
@ mentions place the lead's name, city or chosen service in the subject of the alert.

Frequently asked questions
Can I insert only the lead's first name?
Yes. The Name field can be inserted in parts, so you can pick the first name without the title or last name.
Does the text update while the lead is filling in the form?
Yes. The content updates automatically, so a change to an earlier answer shows in the text that recalls it.
Is there merge tag syntax to learn?
No. You type @ in the text editor and pick the field from a list.
Can I use callouts on a form built before the feature existed?
